2.- ELITE SQUADRON (J.Velazquez)

Rebellion (GB) unleashed a determined late run near the middle of the track and overtook pacesetter Elite Squadron in the closing strides to win the $390,000 Commonwealth Stakes (G2) by a head on Saturday at Keeneland Race Course.
Earning his first graded stakes win, Rebellion raced six wide under jockey Edgar Prado and dropped back to eighth in the field of ten through a half-mile in :46.32, more than two lengths off the pace. Moving up to fourth in early stretch, Rebellion rallied with an explosive late rush in his first start since finishing unplaced in the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) on October 27 at Monmouth Park.
Elite Squadron set the pace in the three path and maintained a one-length lead through early stretch. Rebellion closed within approximately one length of the leader in early stretch, seized command on the outside of Elite Squadron, and won the seven-furlong race in 1:21.40 on Keeneland’s synthetic Polytrack surface.
Elite Squadron finished 1 3/4 lengths in front of third-place finisher Medzendeekron.
Graham Motion trains Rebellion for James and Marylea Treptow's Hickory Tree Stables. The Mozart (Ire) horse earned his first stakes win in the 2007 Steinlen Stakes at Belmont Park and finished second in last year’s Phoenix Stakes (G3) at Keeneland.
Rebellion posted his sixth win in 15 starts and increased his earnings to $400,347. Bred in England by Darley, Rebellion is out of English Group 2 winner Last Resort (GB), by Lahib.
