Hystericalady rebounded from a disappointing fourth-place finish in her season debut with a convincing 3 1/2-length romp in the $171,500 Azeri Stakes (G3) on Sunday at Oaklawn Park.
The five-year-old Distorted Humor mare amassed three wins, three seconds, and one third in eight starts last season, including victories in the Humana Distaff Stakes (G1) and the Molly Pitcher Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2). Hystericalady closed the season with a runner-up finish to Ginger Punch in the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) on October 27 at Monmouth Park for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who co-owns Hystericalady along with Rancho San Miguel, George Todaro, and William Clark.
Hystericalady faded to fourth in the Santa Monica Handicap (G1) on February 2 at Santa Anita Park but bounced back in a big way in the Azeri.
Clever Strike dueled with Hystericalady for the early lead and set the pace through a half-mile in :48.27 as Robby Albarado settled 7-to-10 favorite Hystericalady into an ideal stalking position in second. Multiple graded stakes winner Kettleoneup trailed the five-horse field in the 1 1/16-mile race for older females.
Hystericalady powered forward to seize command from Clever Strike on the turn and shook free in early stretch to a 1 1/2-length lead. Hystericalady completed the distance in 1:43.86 on a track rated as fast to improve to eight wins in 17 career starts.
Runner-up Brownie Points was 1 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Clever Strike. Kettleoneup swept menacingly into the stretch but faded to fourth.
Out of Chilean champion Sacramentada (Arg), by Northair, Hystericalady has earned $1,278,503.
