17 Abr. GB. Weatherbys Earl of Sefton S. G3. Newmarket. 9f. Turf. 50.000 £
1.- PHOENIX TOWER (T.Queally)
2.- TRAFFIC GUARD (J.Egan)
3.- PIPEDREAMER (J.Fortune)
TWICE over it was for Henry Cecil and owner Khalid Abdullah as Phoenix Tower overcame trouble in running in the Earl of Sefton Stakes to complete a double for connections.
And although it was the second string who obliged in the Weatherbys-sponsored Group 3, it was a victory that clearly brought plenty of satisfaction for the trainer after Twice Over's success in the Craven Stakes earlier.
The 2-1 chance Multidimensional carried the stable's main hopes, but the steady pace was of little help to him from his draw in stall seven as Ted Durcan looked to get cover for him. At the head of affairs it was Kandidate and Ryan Moore acting as the hare, with 8-1 shot Phoenix Tower pulling a little keenly for Tom Queally just behind.
Traffic Guard, who had been close up, made his bid for glory when sent to the front over a furlong out and was soon pressed by the 6-4 favourite Pipedreamer. But Phoenix Tower was ready to poune after being denied a clear run over a furlong out and, keeping on strongly on the stands' rails, forced his head in front to score by a head from Traffic Guard with a neck back to Pipedreamer.
Cecil said: "Phoenix Tower was very fresh and has done well to come back and win this, having fractured his pelvis after winning at Windsor last year. He is unbeaten in four starts now, but we don't have any plans at the moment.
"Multidimensional couldn't get any cover where he was drawn, but he will be a different horse next time out."
Traffic Guard had the benefit of four outings in Dubai this year, but his effort on his return home had his new trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam planning more trips abroad.
She said: "I was very pleased with his run as we had a little bit of a hiccup when he bruised his foot in the past 48 hours. He's a good horse and we hope we get invited to Singapore.
"There were some really nice horses in this and it was really a Group 2 race."
Pipedreamer was unable to make the immediate step up to winning in Group company after taking the Cambridgeshire on his final start at three, but his performance left connections believing that would soon be rectified.
Chris Richardson, managing director of owner Cheveley Park Stud, said: "It was a bit of a sprint, which didn't suit Pipedreamer.
He'll come on a lot for this and we will probably go a mile and a quarter.
"The Brigadier Gerard Stakes would be a possible target, but that is a little way off and we might try to find a race before that."
